The article discusses the factors that made it possible for Theravada Buddhism to work in a Muslim setting in Kelantan, Malaysia, despite a cultural and social environment that is linked with Islamic fundamentalism. It says that Buddhism has flourished in the area despite being a minority religion. The author argues that cultural coexistence between Malay Muslims and Siamese Buddhists works well although the socio-political setting in Kelantan is known for its fundamentalist traits and orthodoxy. The key aspects of Theravada Buddhism are also discussed. (Author's abstract)
