Receiving adequate information and
support both mentally and emotionally at this stage is crucial for their development shortly before and after they
graduate school, thus needing serious attention from school counsellors. Conducting comprehensive and effective
counselling programmes addressing the said issues requires identification of the specific needs of their students. This
study was conducted to identify the components of counselling needs perceived as important by secondary school
students themselves. This study applied the qualitative research design with phenomenological techniques due to its
relevance in describing and understanding the components of counselling needs outlined by the research objective. The
participants involved 16 secondary school students who were purposively selected from two secondary schools in
Selangor, Malaysia. The data were collected through semi-structured focus group interview sessions and analysed
using the Thematic Analysis method. From the analysis, it was found that the components of counselling needs
perceived as important by the research participants are grouped into six different categories; leading with personal
development needs, then emotional needs, career development needs, academic needs, peer relationship needs, and
family needs respectively. Other than helping school counsellors strategise their work in assisting students to endure
their life challenges, the identified counselling needs components can also assist researchers in developing instruments
related to counselling needs assessment. Healthcare Workers and National Vaccination ProgrammeStress levels can be raised by psychosocial risks, which can lead to physical and mental health problems. Low motivation, exhaustion, anxiety, sadness, burnout, and suicidal ideation are all possible psychological responses. Malaysia has one of the highest COVID-19 immunisation rates in the world. Although this is a huge accomplishment, we must keep in mind that it adds to the taskforce's workload. Between January 2019 and May 2020, there were an average of two suicide deaths per day. The Royal Malaysia Police Force, on the other hand, reported that suicide rates had doubled in the first five months of 2021. A mass vaccination centre in Kuala Lumpur was closed on August 6, 2021, after over 200 medical staff and volunteers tested positive for the coronavirus. Fear is rising among healthcare workers as a result of a previous occurrence like this, and the current emergence of the Delta strain of the Virus, and now the Omicron, can only alarm the healthcare family. According to a study conducted by American International Assurance (AIA Vitality), majority of Malaysian workforce unable to get enough sleep. One out of every ten Malaysian representatives is nervous or discouraged, with the majority of them being in their twenties and thirties. As is the case during a pandemic, healthcare workers are overworked. They must deal with the effects of public misconception, face stress from relatives, fear of contracting the obscure illness and becoming a carrier of the illness, and now seek protection from the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and vaccinations to which they have adhered during vaccination programmes. Frontline workers' mental health issues, particularly burnout and fear, should be addressed by policymakers. Future national and organisational interventions must include providing adequate social support, building self-efficacy and resilience, and ensuring frontline work willingness. Students’ Retention in Open Distance Learning
during Pandemic Covid-19 Crisis? This study aims to explore the determinants of undergraduate student retention
in Open Distance Learning (ODL). This study focused on the motivation and
goal commitment of students in ODL university. The high attrition rate at higher
education institutions has now become a serious issue. Undergraduate
retention refers to an institution’s ability to retain students from admission until
graduation. In order to achieve the goal, education service providers need to
know what motivates students to remain in the institution, especially during the
economic crisis caused by the pandemic, Covid-19. This paper will provide a
brief overview of undergraduate retention followed by factors commonly related
to undergraduate retention. In this study, the focus will be on motivation and
goal commitment that facilitate the students’ decision-making to continue their
studies in ODL. Data has been collected from active undergraduate students
in 2021. Six learning centres were chosen mainly from Open University
Malaysia. The results indicated that both factors, motivations and commitment,
are positively significant towards student retention. The management can use
the result in managing and understanding the retention issues. Social Support and Mental Health in Influencing the Vulnerability of Involvement in Drug Addiction and Social Deviance among Adolescents.Adolescents currently face various challenges such as school dropout, deviant behaviour, communication and conflict with family and negative exposure to media social. Apart from that, adolescents are also influenced by family and school environment and relationship with peer groups during their developmental process. Negative environment and peer influence may cause adolescents to be involved in drug abuse and social deviance. Therefore, the objectives of this article are to: (1) identify the relationship between social support, general mental health, vulnerability of involvement in drug addiction and social deviance, (2) assess the roles of social support and general mental health as predictors towards vulnerability of involvement in drug addiction, and (3) assess the roles of social support and general mental health as predictors towards social deviance. This study employed a survey design by distributing questionnaires to 604 adolescents in areas identified by the National Anti-Drug Agency as having high drug statistics. The questionnaire comprised of items measuring social support, general mental health, vulnerability of involvement in drug addiction and social deviance. Results showed that there were negative and significant correlations between social support, general mental health, vulnerability of involvement in drug addiction and social deviance. Social support and general mental health were also found to significantly predict vulnerability of involvement in drug addiction. Findings of this study imply the importance of increasing the role of protective factors in combating the problem of drug abuse among adolescents. community. However, there is a gap between a valid and reliable instrument to measure the love of humanity in
Malaysia. This study aims to validate the Humanitarian Love Scale (HLS) by using exploratory and
confirmatory analysis with a sample of 500 volunteers. The HLS is a set of questionnaires that has 50 items with
10 domains. It were namely Altruism, Philanthropy, Caring, Tolerance, Shared Values, Love of Kindness, Moderation, Obeying Law, Empathy and Social Responsibility. Two steps of analysis have been done through
Exploratory Analysis (EFA) and followed by Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). The analysis was using SPSS
and Amos version 22.0. The Cronbach's alpha coef icient for subscale ranging from 0.660 to 0.818 and overall
scale 0.888. Finally, after the confirmatory process through CFA, there are only 29 items were chosen as an
HLS Instrument, with 9 new domains, excluding Moderation. The study found that HLS was a reliable and valid
scale to measure the love of humanity based on the domains measured. This study supports the conceptual
framework and provides practical implication in the field of social psychology and psychological testing. (Abstract by authors) Syaidatun Nazirah Abu Zahrin A. Online Learning Skill of First-Year Undergraduates
Learning Online During COVID-19 Pandemic This study examined the relationship between the emotional stability,
motivation, and online study skills of first-year undergraduate students at a
public university in the east coast of Malaysia who studied online at home
during the COVID-19 pandemic. The main objective of the study was to seek
better understanding on the level of online study skills, motivation, and
emotional stability of new undergraduate students who were engaged in online
learning. A total of 159 students selected through purposive sampling
participated in the online survey. They answered two sets of instruments, the
Learner Personality Profile and Online Learning Skill, which consisted of 60
items and 30 items respectively. Both instruments were measured based on a
five-point Likert scale. The Learner Personality Profile scale comprised (1)
never, (2) rarely, (3) sometimes, (4) very often, and (5) always responses,
while the Online Learning Skill scale consisted of (1) strongly disagree, (2)
disagree, (3) neither agree nor disagree, (4) agree, and (5) strongly agree
responses. The findings of the study showed that female students’ level of
motivation scores (mean=3.90) were higher than male students’ scores
(mean=3.61) based on a three-level range of mean scores (low=1.00 to 2.33,
average=2.34 to 3.67, and high=3.68 to 5.00). Female students’ level of online
study skills scores (mean=3.90) were also reported to be higher than male
students’ scores (mean=3.61). However, both male and female students
reported a low level of emotional stability scores (mean=2.20 and mean=2.19
respectively). The correlation analyses showed a significant relationship
between online study skills and emotional stability, and between motivation and emotional stability. Curiously, the motivation variable did not act as a
mediating factor in the relationship between online study skills and emotional
stability based on the multiple-regression analysis. shame on depression symptoms among married couples from low-income apartments in the suburbs of Kuala Lumpur. A door-to-door approach was used to recruit participants and collect data. Three research scales were used in this study:
the Experience in Close Relationship-Revised Version questionnaire was used to
measure individual differences in adult attachment styles, the Other as Shamer
Scale was used to measure external shame, and the Personal Health Questionnaire was used to measure depression symptoms. This study reports that the most common depression symptoms reported are among individuals who experienced depression symptoms for less than one month. Results showed that dualinsecure couples (wives’ anxiety attachment and husbands’ avoidance attachment, wives’ avoidance attachment and husbands’ avoidance attachment) were
significantly correlated with depression in a sample of the wives. The findings also
revealed that a specific type of dual-insecure couples (wives’ anxiety attachment
and husbands’ avoidance attachment) was a predictor of depression symptoms.
These results provide evidence for a role of specific dual-insecure couples and
external shame on depression symptoms. In the present study, a total of 150 female patients were analyzed for depression, anxiety and stress based on their age, ethnicity, waiting period of the mammographic examination results and the mammographic results. On this basis, nine hypotheses were proposed for the following study. Robust analysis on each hypothesis was successfully performed using the data acquired from psychometric assessments of the female patients. The data includes the state of mental health ranging from a scale of 1 – 5 (Normal – chronic respectively), was analyzed using ONE – WAY ANOVA statistical tool. Dependent variables such as age, waiting period and mammographic results were compared against each of the factors depression, anxiety and stress. The research provided an overview of depression, anxiety and stress among the patients who were examined. Thus, hypothesis four, five and six were rejected, implying that there are significant differences between the occurrences of depression, anxiety and stress and its paramount correlation with the different age groups of patients. The middle-aged patients of the age group 41 – 50 years old suffered from mild to moderate levels of depression, anxiety and stress (mean value < 3) during the mammographic examinations, with more patients experiencing anxiety (2.30 ± 0.21) followed by stress (3.34 ± 0.24), and depression (2.68 ± 0.21). The study is analysed by an independent- samples t-test which conducted to compare learners score on the subject. This study initiated to compare the consequence of content delivery by two different background tutors. The samples chosen for this study are the second-year undergraduates for the subject Abnormal Psychology in Open University Malaysia (OUM). The sample size consisted of 48 learners who were randomly assigned to experimental group and control group, each consisting of 24 learners. The two tutors chosen for this study are, a tutor of andragogical approach (Tutor A) who completed the nine modules of Postgraduate Certificate in Open and Distance Learning (PGCert ODL) which involve a total of 400 learning hours preparing her for effective andragogical teaching skills for adult learners. The Tutor A is consigned as experimental group, while Tutor B is assigned to be in control group and was teaching the subject for the past 7 years without any certificate in teaching in open and distance learning skills. At the end of the semester, both groups were tested with a set of subjective tests to measure their understanding and knowledge of the subject. The findings showed that there was a significant difference in the scores for experimental group (M=57.17, SD= 14.12) and control group (37.92,SD=10.35), t (23)=9.25, p= 0.001.These results provided evidence that learners taught by andragogical approach consumed by Tutor A showed better score as compared to the control group. The vital outcome of the study is that a tutor with familiarity and trained in teaching in open and distance learning extent would be able to deliver the content effectively. It is proven that steps taken by OUM to progress internal academics had given a rewarding outcome in terms of learner’s academic achievement. sessions. The theories used not only assist the counsellors in handling their
sessions with appropriate techniques, but also guide the counsellors to
conceptually understand the issues that are confronted by the client. The
purpose of this study is to identify the potential factors leading to the choice of
counselling theory among counsellors in Malaysia. This study is intended to
analyse the main reasons behind counsellors’ choice of theoretical orientation
in their readiness to provide counselling services in Malaysia. Sixty
questionnaires were distributed to randomly selected counsellors. However,
only thirty-one (n=31) were accepted for analysis using percentage and
mean. A quantitative approach was used, where the participants completed
an instrument named Theoretical Contributing Factors Scale which consists
of nine (9) sub-scales of potential factors. The findings demonstrated that
internal factors were the most significant contributing factors for the
participants in selecting their counselling theoretical orientation. This study
will also encourage other researchers to explore further the factors that
contribute to theoretical orientation selection among practicing counsellors in
a larger sample. berdasarkan demografi iaitu (jantina, umur, tempoh perkhidmatan dan status
perkahwinan) dalam kalangan kakitangan MAINS Holdings Sdn. Bhd. di Seremban,
Negeri Sembilan.
inovatif. Taxonomy of Anderson and KrathwohlLearning activities should involve explicit thinking skills. It is more convenient to categorize thinking skills based on the existing frameworks. The framework that is still considered very useful and popular among educators is Taxonomy Bloom (1956). Bloom's Taxonomy of cognitive domain is categorized into six type of thinking skills (Meyer, 1988; Som and Mohd Dahalan, 1998; Widad and Kandar, 2006). According to Tee et al. (2009), lower order thinking skills are the level of knowledge, understanding and application, while the level of higher order thinking skills are analysis, synthesis and evaluation. However, a revised on Taxonomy Bloom had been done by Bloom’s students, Anderson and Krathwohl in the year of 2001. There are some significant changes based on the revised taxonomy. This article will discuss about the Piaget’s cognitive theory and the differences between cognitive and meta-cognitive. In addition, Bloom's Taxonomy (1956) and Taxonomy of Anderson and Krathwohl (2001) will also be discussed. Besides that, this article will also address the action verbs widely used in each level of thinking skills and thinking skills evaluation tools such as objective tests, essay tests, and rubric. to learn among Open University Malaysia (OUM) learners.
Factors such as learners' diversity, technological variety and learners’ knowledge gap in using e-learning are
some of the significant universal usability challenges need to be considered when conducting the e-learning
usability evaluation. Pedagogical usability also need to be considered while developing e-learning application.
Traditional usability measures of effectiveness, efficiency, satisfaction and cognitive learning factors are no
longer adequate for newer contexts of e-learning usage. It is critical that e-learning developers assess affective
dimension, in which the learners may experience while interacting with e-learning. To this end, motivation to
learn, which is one of the affective aspect, has been identified as a new usability measurement. A theoretical
framework has been developed to investigate the relationship between e-learning usability attributes and
learning motivation. Nurhizam Safie Mohd Satar
