"Multimedia learning objects are an essential\r\ncomponent of high quality, technology-mediated\r\ninstruction. Learning objects allow the student to use\r\nthe content learned in a particular part of a course and;\r\n1. demonstrate mastery of the content, 2. apply that\r\nknowledge to solving a problem, and 3. use the\r\ncontent in a critical thinking exercise that both\r\ndemonstrates mastery and allows the student to place\r\nthe content within the context of the larger topic of the\r\ncourse. The difficulty associated with the use of\r\nlearning objects on a broad scale is that they require\r\nprogramming skills most professors and instructors do\r\nnot possess. Learning objects also tend to be custom\r\nproductions and are defined in terms of the\r\nprogramming and code terminology, further limiting\r\nthe professor’s ability to understand how they are\r\ncreated. Learning objects defined in terms of styles of\r\nlearning and teaching allow professors and instructors\r\nto develop a deeper understanding of the learning\r\nobjects and the design process.\r\nA set of learning objects has been created that are\r\ndesigned for some of the important styles of learning\r\nand teaching. They include; visual learning, writing\r\nskills, critical thinking, time-revealed scenarios, case\r\nstudies and empirical observation. The learning\r\nobjects are designed and described in terms that the\r\naverage instructor can readily understand , redesign\r\nand incorporate into their own courses. They are also\r\ndesigned in such a way that they can readily be\r\nrepurposed for new applications in other courses and\r\nsubject areas, with little or no additional\r\nprogramming.
