        abstract = {Since Independence in 1957 Malaysia?s economic development strategy
can be described as one that espouses integration with the world economy,
given that trade has been an important component of its development process,
while FDI too plays an important role. This strategy yielded impressive results
as the economy was transformed from an agriculture-based economy to one
with a large industrial base. Malaysia, for example, grew at an average rate of
8.8\% between 1990-1996. This was also accompanied by low inflation,
declining inequality, significant reductions in the poverty level and a high
savings rate. Malaysia therefore enjoyed relatively strong ?fundamentals? just
